“Hello! I’m Calvin Frey, an educator with a passion for connecting children to nature and teaching through movement. I moved to Washington in 2006, drawn by the state’s natural beauty, and have since become an advocate for empowering future generations.

I hold a Master's in Teaching from the University of Washington, a Washington State Teaching Certificate, and a Health and Fitness Endorsement, with over 12 years of experience in physical education and classroom instruction. My teaching philosophy centers on nurturing body and mind, and creating engaging, inclusive learning environments that include the whole child. I’ve developed district-wide, innovative curricula that meet the needs of every child while being fun and engaging. I have also built partnerships with programs that focus on empowering students with the tools they need to succeed. All together, I’ve found that if you put in the effort to create engaging and fun lessons, students will thrive!

At Tender Leaves Outdoor Preschool, I’m excited to combine my love for the outdoors with my commitment to the education of future generations. My goal is to inspire curiosity and respect for nature, preparing children not just for school, but for a lifetime of exploration and growth. “I am honored to have the opportunity to work with you and your child(ren) at Tender Leaves Preschool.

I grew up on a farm along the beautiful Olympic Peninsula, where I enjoyed the natural wonders of the region—playing in the woods and exploring the shores of Puget Sound. These formative experiences instilled in me a profound appreciation for nature and the harmonious rhythms of life.

As an adult, I am committed to lifelong learning and have a background in both the medical field and childcare administration. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in psychology, with a focus on Adlerian psychology, neuropsychology and pro-social development. I believe that the preschool years are crucial for an individual's lifelong development. In my teaching, I incorporate principles from early attachment theory to help lay a strong foundation for self-efficacy and emotional regulation.

I come from a multicultural background, being a third-generation immigrant of Latin American descent, while my husband is a first-generation Slavic immigrant. Together, we cherish our young son and strive to embrace the full spectrum of diversity. I am dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that celebrates not only visible differences but also various experiences, beliefs, and perspectives. It is my hope that all children and families feel valued for who they are, knowing they have a supportive advocate throughout their preschool journey.”

Hi, I’m Heather! Throughout my career, I have been driven by a simple belief: every child deserves an environment that fully supports their emotional, physical, and cognitive growth. There is no greater joy than watching a child learn, grow, and flourish.

My teaching philosophy centers on building deep, positive relationships. From my time as a Lead Teacher to my role as a Preschool Program Director, I have learned that focusing on a child's strengths, engaging in meaningful play, and responding to their unique needs builds a vital foundation of trust.

This philosophy aligns perfectly with Tender Leaves. Here, nature transforms into the ultimate playground—shells become boats, trees become food stands, we "drill" for clay on the beach, and look for crabs under the rocks. Getting to spot porpoises and birds of prey almost daily makes this the quintessential Pacific Northwest childhood experience.

I hold a BA in English with Honors from UC Santa Barbara, a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Counseling and Psychology Professions from UC Berkeley Extension, a WA State Certificate in Early Childhood Education, and I am currently completing my AAS in Early Childhood Education from North Seattle College. In my free time, I enjoy running, cycling, swimming, strength training, and competing in triathlons.
