FAQs:
Curious About Nature-Based Learning? We’ve Got You Covered!
At Tender Leaves Outdoor Preschool, we believe in transparency, trust, and keeping families informed. Below you’ll find answers to common questions about our program’s model, practices, and values.
1. What is a nature-based preschool?
A nature-based preschool takes the classroom outdoors. Children spend their days learning through interactions with the natural environment. Our students explore, create, and discover through nature-focused activities such as:
Storytelling and circle time in the forest
Sensory play with sticks, mud, sand, and other natural materials
Hands-on science discoveries (for example, observing insects or growing plants)
Outdoor exploration is part of our daily routine, rain or shine, helping children build a strong connection to nature as they learn.
2. What ages do you accept?
We welcome children ages 3 to 5 years old. Our program is designed to nurture social, emotional, and early academic growth in this preschool age range, preparing kids for a smooth transition into kindergarten and beyond.
3. What if my child has never been in a preschool setting?
That’s okay. Many of our students are new to a school setting. We keep our class sizes small (with a 1:6 teacher-to-child ratio) so that every child feels seen and supported. Our caring teachers take time to help children settle in, learn the routines, and make new friends at their own pace in a warm, nurturing environment.
4. What are your program hours and schedule? Will you offer extended care?
Our current program runs from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Families can choose either a three-day schedule (Monday/Wednesday/Friday) or a five-day schedule (Monday through Friday). As we grow, we are working toward offering extended-day options up to 6 hours per day for families who need a longer program. We’ll keep our families updated on extended hours once we complete our state licensing process (see next question).
5. Are you a licensed childcare program?
We are not yet licensed, but we are actively working with Washington State’s Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) to become a fully licensed Outdoor Nature-Based preschool. We expect to complete the licensing process soon. Being licensed will bring several benefits for our families:
Access to subsidies: Families who qualify for state childcare assistance can use their benefits with our program once we’re licensed.
Longer days: Licensing will allow us to offer a longer preschool day (up to 6 hours), providing more flexibility for working parents.
Highest standards: A DCYF license means we meet or exceed the state’s health, safety, and early education standards. Our facilities and program will be regularly inspected to ensure quality.
Background-checked staff: All teachers will undergo thorough background checks and fingerprinting as part of the licensing requirements, adding an extra layer of safety.
Ongoing teacher training: Licensed programs commit to continuous professional development. Our staff will take part in ongoing training to stay current with early childhood best practices.
In short, licensing is an important step that ensures we provide a safe, high-quality learning environment and can better serve our community.
6. Do children really go outside in all weather?
Yes, we do. Rain, shine, or even snow – we treat nature as our classroom. We embrace all seasons and weather conditions as learning opportunities. Children come dressed for the day (rain boots, waterproof jackets, warm layers in winter) so they stay comfortable and safe outdoors. We also have access to covered areas and shelters at our park site for very wet or windy weather. In cases of truly severe conditions or any safety concerns, we will notify parents and follow our emergency weather plan — safety always comes first.
7. What is the teacher-to-child ratio?
We maintain a low 1:6 teacher-to-student ratio (one teacher for every six children). A smaller ratio ensures:
Each child receives plenty of individualized attention and support.
Close supervision during outdoor exploration, which keeps everyone safe.
Teachers can build strong relationships with each child and tailor learning to their needs.
8. What happens if my child gets hurt?
Safety is our top priority. All staff are CPR and First Aid certified and trained to handle emergencies. If a child gets hurt, we will immediately administer appropriate first aid and comfort your child. We always notify parents right away if an injury occurs (even for minor bumps). For any serious incident, we would follow our emergency procedures and seek additional medical care as needed. Rest assured, we keep a well-stocked first aid kit on hand and have clear protocols in place to handle injuries promptly and calmly.
9. What does a typical day look like?
Each day at Tender Leaves follows a consistent yet flexible routine that balances structure with free exploration. A sample day looks like:
Morning Circle: We gather to greet one another, sing a welcome song, and talk about the day’s plan or theme.
Exploration & Play: Children engage in child-led outdoor play and discovery – climbing logs, digging in the dirt, making mud pies, observing bugs, and following their curiosity.
Snack & Story Time: We pause for a healthy snack and a story (or puppet show) related to our nature theme. This gives children a chance to refuel and relax.
Small-Group Activities: Teachers introduce a short, planned activity such as an art project, nature science experiment, or group game to build specific skills and knowledge.
Closing Circle: We come back together to reflect on the day’s adventures. Children share their favorite discoveries, and we end with a goodbye song or gentle closing activity.
This daily rhythm provides stability and familiarity for the children, while still leaving plenty of room for spontaneous fun and learning inspired by the outdoors.
10. How will I know my child is learning and growing?
We take a blended, child-led approach to early education (inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy), so you will see your child gaining skills in a natural, play-driven way. Our teachers closely observe each child’s development and document their progress. Here’s how we keep you informed about your child’s learning:
Daily updates via Brightwheel: We use a secure app called Brightwheel for attendance and parent communication. Through Brightwheel, you’ll receive real-time updates each day – photos of activities, brief notes on what the class did, and highlights of your child’s experiences – so you can share in their day.
Learning documentation: We maintain individual portfolios and “learning stories” for each child. These include artworks, nature journals, photos, and teacher observation notes that showcase your child’s growth over time. You can see how their skills and interests are expanding throughout the year.
Parent-teacher conferences: We offer formal check-ins twice a year (and are always available for questions). During these conferences, we’ll discuss your child’s progress, celebrate their achievements, and talk about any goals or support they might need.
By combining a rich, inquiry-based curriculum with ongoing communication, we ensure you can confidently follow your child’s development and know they are thriving both academically and socially.
11. How do I enroll my child?
Enrolling is simple. We offer an online registration process through our Brightwheel portal. Just visit our Sign Up page (or contact us directly), and we will guide you through the steps. There is an enrollment fee to reserve your child’s spot, and then monthly tuition is charged based on the schedule you choose (3-day or 5-day program). If you have any questions or need assistance during the enrollment process, we’re happy to help. We look forward to welcoming your family to Tender Leaves!
