Our Mission and Vision
At Tender Leaves Outdoor Preschool, our mission is to provide a unique, nature-based early learning experience for children ages 3–5 that lays a strong foundation for future success. We believe childhood is a time of discovery, adventure, and limitless potential. By blending structured learning with child-led exploration, we inspire curiosity, creativity, and confidence in every child. In our safe, supportive outdoor classrooms, children are encouraged to explore, play, and grow – developing essential life skills along the way.
We nurture the whole child – mind and body – by combining educational excellence with the joy of nature. Your child will develop a deep love for the natural world while also building early academic and social skills for kindergarten and beyond. Our vision is to redefine early childhood education in Kitsap County by showing that a program can be both wild and whimsical and highly intentional. We’re proud to be on track to become one of the only licensed outdoor preschools in the area, setting a new standard for quality and accountability in nature-based education.
Meet the Founder: Calvin Frey
Hello! I’m Calvin Frey, the founder and director of Tender Leaves. I have always been passionate about connecting children to nature and teaching through movement. I moved to Washington in 2006, drawn by the state’s natural beauty, and I’ve since become an advocate for empowering future generations through education.
I hold a Master’s in Teaching from the University of Washington and a Washington State Teaching Certificate with a Health and Fitness endorsement. I’ve spent over 12 years as a teacher in both physical education and the traditional classroom. Over the years I’ve developed innovative, district-wide curricula that engage all learners, and I’ve built partnerships with programs focused on giving students the tools they need to succeed. I’ve found that when you create lessons that are fun, hands-on, and inclusive, students truly thrive!
At Tender Leaves Outdoor Preschool, I’m thrilled to combine my love of the outdoors with my commitment to early education. My goal is to inspire curiosity and respect for nature, preparing children not just for school, but for a lifetime of exploration and growth. Whether through a hands-on science activity or a community volunteer project, I’m dedicated to making Tender Leaves a place where children flourish. I’m so excited to see our little learners grow strong roots here in the Kitsap community and beyond.
What Sets Us Apart
-
We intentionally keep our classes small (just 12 students with 2 teachers) to ensure each child receives individualized attention. With our 1:6 teacher-to-child ratio, every child is truly known and supported. This intimate setting allows teachers to bond with each student and tailor learning to their needs, while also closely guiding social interactions so kids develop great social skills in a safe setting.
-
We are actively working toward full licensure as an Outdoor Nature-Based Preschool through Washington State’s Department of Children, Youth & Families. Being a licensed program means we meet rigorous state standards for health, safety, and teacher qualifications. Once licensed, we’ll be able to offer longer hours and accept state childcare subsidies, expanding access for more families. Our commitment to licensing shows we go above and beyond basic requirements – you can trust that quality and safety are our top priorities.
-
Our teachers are experienced early childhood educators with specialized training in outdoor education. All staff are CPR/First Aid certified and background-checked. More importantly, we are deeply committed to nurturing confident, curious learners. From circle time to forest hikes, our teachers bring patience, creativity, and warmth to every moment. (And yes – we love what we do!)
-
We believe in purposeful play. That means we follow the children’s interests and weave in gentle structure to achieve key learning goals. Our curriculum is designed to build early skills in literacy, math, science, and the arts through hands-on activities. Whether it’s counting pinecones, learning letters in the sand, or experimenting with water flow, our teachers guide play toward rich learning. By the time our kids head to kindergarten, they’re ready to shine – all gained through joyful, play-based exploration.
-
Why stay indoors when the best classroom is outside? Our “campus” is the great outdoors – including forest trails, beach tide pools, grassy fields, and covered picnic shelters. We chose our site at Salsbury Point Park for its natural beauty, safety, and endless learning potential. Children might observe sea creatures on the shore in the morning, then climb mossy logs in the afternoon. Rain or shine, our environment engages the senses and encourages adventure. (And don’t worry – we have sheltered areas for wet weather and always put safety first.)
-
We support every part of your child’s development – physical, emotional, social, and cognitive. Our program includes active movement (like yoga stretches, balance games, and cooperative play) to develop gross motor skills and coordination. We also nurture social-emotional growth through teamwork, stories, and routines that build empathy and self-regulation. By integrating movement, play, and nature-based learning, we make sure your child’s body and mind are growing strong.
-
When you join Tender Leaves, you join a family. We foster a warm, inclusive community where parents are partners and children build lifelong friendships. We love bringing families together through park playdates, seasonal celebrations, and parent involvement opportunities. As a local Kitsap County preschool, we pride ourselves on creating a supportive village for your child. You’ll get to know the other parents and feel connected as we all watch our “tender leaves” grow.
-
Climbing trees, balancing on logs, exploring nature – it all comes with manageable risks that help children learn and gain confidence. We take safety seriously by conducting detailed risk assessments and maintaining active supervision at all times. Our approach is “risk-aware” rather than risk-averse: we allow children to test their limits in a thoughtful way. Kids learn how to navigate challenges and solve problems, but we’re always right there ensuring everyone stays safe. Your child will build resilience and independence, and you can feel secure knowing we’ve got a careful eye on them.
